Everything to Know About Bhutanese Visa for International Visitors

To visit Bhutan, most international travelers must secure a visa prior to arrival. Here's a concise guide to help you navigate the process:

Who Needs a Visa?

Visa Required: All foreign nationals, except citizens of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, must obtain a visa before traveling to Bhutan.

Visa Exempt: Citizens of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives do not require a visa to enter Bhutan.

How to Apply for a Visa?

1. Engage a Licensed Tour Operator: Bhutan mandates that tourists book their trips through licensed tour operators. These operators will handle the visa application on your behalf.

2. Provide Necessary Documentation: You'll need to submit a clear scan of your passport (valid for at least six months beyond your intended arrival date) and a recent passport-sized photograph.

3. Pay the Visa Fee: The standard visa fee is USD 40 per person. This fee is typically included in your tour package.

4. Obtain Visa Clearance: Once approved, you'll receive a visa clearance letter. Present this letter upon arrival in Bhutan to have the visa stamped into your passport.

Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)

In addition to the visa fee, Bhutan levies a Sustainable Development Fee of USD 100 per person per day. This fee supports the country's sustainable tourism initiatives and is usually included in your tour package.

Processing Time
Visa processing can take up to five business days. It's advisable to initiate your travel plans well in advance to accommodate this timeline.

Important Considerations
Passport Validity: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned arrival date in Bhutan.

Travel Insurance: Having valid travel insurance is a requirement for obtaining a visa.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey to the enchanting Kingdom of Bhutan.
